Orchard Care

Our specialty is with woody, perennials crops.  We use only organic methods for pest and disease control, and abide by the tenets of Integrated Pest Management.

Fruit Tree Pruning

Dormant-season pruning improves the health and vigor of fruit (and ornamental) trees, shrubs and vines.  Allowing enough air and light to reach all of the fruit, and keeping growth under control greatly enhances the aesthetics and performance of a backyard orchard.  Summer pruning is also recommended for optimal tree health, but isn't completely necessary.

Before

Orchard
Dormant Fuji apple trees with crowded, overgrown branches.
After
Organic
Pruned to allow plenty of breathability; enhancing fruit set and keeping trees workable and attractive.

Season Extension

Even if you have limited space, enough for only one tree, we can put several varieties of the same species on that tree!  This is known as a fruit cocktail tree.  This can serve to extend your fruiting season.  While an apple tree, for instance, might give you more apples than you know what to do with all at once, we can instead turn it into a seasonal succession tree, fruiting a little of each variety over several months.

Pictured here is a Dapple Dandy Pluot (midseason, plum-apricot hybrid) branch grafted onto a mature cherry plum (early season) tree.  You can have peaches, plums, apricots, nectarines, cherries, and almonds all on the same tree!

Increased Fruit Set

We can also graft for pollination enhancement, such as inserting male sections onto a female kiwi vine, or A-types onto B-type avocados.
